The rural village of Maidenwell, approximately 200 kilometres north-west of
Brisbane, has an interesting history. John King, a selector from nearby Tarong, settled in the area in 1882, and his
homestead served as a stopping place for stage coaches. It was also a store, a butcher and a
post office. In 1912, John King acquired land on the site of the present village, and the hotel, which is still operating today, was the first building constructed in 1914. Maidenwell derived its name from the first
water well that was dug in the district. Maidenwell is ideally situated as the gateway to the majestic
Bunya Mountains. Located just 27 kilometres from Yarraman, 30 kilometres from Nanango and 45 kilometres from Kingaroy, there are many easy day and half-day activities around Maidenwell, including walking/bike tracks, Palms National
Park, regional wineries, historic Ringsfield House, the first
graves in the Nanango Shire, and, of course, the
Bunya Mountains.Maidenwell is located 28 km from Nanango on the Tarong Road. The town's main attraction is the
Coomba Falls with their deep, very cold, natural
swimming hole. They are located 2 km from town via a road which runs next to the Maidenwell
General Store and reaches a car
park above the falls. There is a new stairway down to the
swimming hole where the waterfall
cascades over volcanic rocks.
