If you want to travel further south than
Cockle Creek then you have to walk. But that is made easier because it is the starting point of some challenging walking tracks and some easy local tracks as
well.
Facilities at
Cockle Creek camping area its self are limited to long drop toilets scattered among the
camp sites. No
bins. Access to tank water (not treated) is permitted. Dogs, generators and campfires are permitted in the Recherche Bay Nature
Recreation Area but not in the National Park area to the south across the bridge.
A little further along, over the bridge on
Cockle Creek, are facilities associated with Boulton Green
camping area which include toilets and picnic facilities, with a shelter containing information about the area and its history. In the tourist season, a
ranger is on site to keep track of campers and walkers. The office is located on the right immediately after you cross the
Cockle Creek Bridge.
About the last 20 kilometres of the road is gravel but seemed to be
well maintained. There are no fees of bookings at
Cockle Creek campground but the National Park area over the creek requires a National Parks pass. There are no camping fees there either.
The area is a great place for a quiet day or so. The
well known whale
lookout and sculpture are a bit further on, accessible by a potholed road that is suitable for 2WD vehicles if dry and appropriate care is taken.
The area is located in Recherche Bay Nature
Recreation Area.
