I was looking for a such a list a while back. My understanding is that the members file originated in thread 34973 back in June 2006.

Back then, when somebody asked a similar question to this thread, a poster pasted a bunch of numbers from another 'net source.

Michelle asked for a volunteer to pretty it up and validate it so that it could be "published for all to download/share in the main part of the site". But people were then after the list pronto so it was quickly added to the members area, where I guess it has sat ever since.

Whilst the members area is restricted, given this particular files' history I see no faux pas with posting its contents here.

Geoff,

I didn't know the history of the file but I agree with your last paragraph hence the copy and paste in to the reply.

The main word used in the post was EMERGENCY ....phone numbers I hear it and see it on radio and TV all the time, 3 ZERO'S we are taught, not 911 but [ 000 ] FIRE , POLICE , AMBULANCE, In an incident and if you have phone service you should call 000, not a Roadhouse , who's the roadhouse going to call ...000 of course

They also tell you not to use 000 if it is not an emergancy......so Doug who you going call then.

We find phone numbers for road houses are good because not all of them are open 24hrs.....alot close at 6pm in country towns.

He actually said emergency then placed in brackets police and/or road houses

So he wants to cover all possibilities.

Show a bit of common sense , He said he wanted Emergency Phone numbers, I know he included roadhouses but they are not emergency services, Yes you would call a roadhouse in a Non emergency

I am showing common sense only a MORON would not know to ring 000 in an emergency.
But half the time out west it is quicker to phone the local emergency services as they actually know the area, where a lot of 000 calls are diverted to a larger locality. For example if you were near Nindigully and called 000 they would put you through to Goondiwindi (about 200km away), where St. George (46km away) or Mungindi (70kms away) is a better option.

Enough said

I use the lists that are on the Hema maps as they're pretty good and relevant for the area. The following is on the SW map:

That's handy!

They even correctly show the use of the 112 number that you can call from mobiles or sat phones if you can't get 000.

Unfortunately 000 does not work with some satphones (including mine).

I stopped at an rollover the other day - had to ring someone to ring 000 to report it - not an ideal situ.

Thanks for the reply's.

There must be a non-000 number for the emergency services.

112 for mobiles is supposed to work anywhere, but I am not entirely sure when it comes to satellite phones. I know it works with Globalstar, when that works ;-)

112 is the international emergency number that can be rung from mobiles and sat phones. Supposedly can be rung from any phone in the world. Not sure where it would be actually picked up (hopefully a Telstra call centre if it originated in Australia) but is handy to know if 000 does not work and supposedly (by international agreements) they can transfer you to the appropriate emergency call centre for your country or region.

There was also a few people saying that from some mobiles you had to ring 0000 (four zeros) to get emergency number but I am unsure on the status of that one. Anyone know?

Cheers

I think the 0000s thing was a myth but based on the predilection for people calling 000 by accidentally pressing the button on their mobile phone, or calling numbers starting with 00 (0011 for international) after 0 to get an outside line.

Perhaps Auntie's switchboard is set up that way for the poor sorry souls who work there and can't count to three.

Marq,
From memory I reckon you are with TRT like me, who I have been with for nearly 3 years.
If so have alook on the front page of your documents, in big black bold writing it will say do not dial 000, dial 112 for emergency.
Not much help now but will be if there is a next time.
We also came across a prang in July, a bloke with head injuries and other broken pieces, dialled 112 and we had help on the way in no time, also had follow up calls from RFDS and Royal Adelaide Hosp. checking his condition.

I tried 000 but it just beeped and went to the offline "Iridium" screen, but a +617xxxxxxxx land line worked. Maybe there was momentary poor signal.

According to Dave at TRT - both 000 and 112 should work - 000 being the primary way and it should not call cost anything.

If you are using a Motorola 9500/9505 with a Telstra GSM Simcard then 000 will work and you will be answered by an Operator in Sydney or Melbourne.
