Sadly my Digitor FM MW LW portable radio has died.

Great little radio could get my ABC & BBC reports almost in every location and local am stations in Adelaide up at Albury.

Any suggesstions for a quality replacement.

If you do a search, Mike Harding (ex contributor) found one on Ebay & after extensive testing found it to be excellent value.

Hi After reading ( possibly Mikes review) a while ago , I bought a Degen DE1103 AM,FM,SW radio.

Only appears to be available on ebay from HK or China, but don't be put off by that, it is an absolute cracker of a radio for the money.
I paid $90 including delivery to WA and took about a week to arrive.
It comes with re chargeable batteries, charger/power unit, case, earphones etc.

The power unit has a funny plug on it but by tweaking the fingers of the plug with a pair of pliers it will fit aussie outlets..there is an adapter available though.

I found it took me a little practice to use the memory storage as the one rotary knob does most functions after pushing the appropriate button first, but apart from that minor critisysm its sensitivaty is excellent and pulls in stations that my old Sony could never find.

I'll second that Hazo, a great radio for taking away with us.

The rotary knob does take a bit of getting used to as well, but it's not a problem.

Hullo Cuffs and Dave B

I use this radio in the bush. It's also a Digitor (Dick Smith brand):

Image Could Not Be Found

A4282 Long Distance Radio

I seem to remember sitting next to you at Innaminka Dave, and this radio pulled in some AM station from somewhere or other while yours sat silent? Or is my memory selective? lol

Stuff from Dickies is hit and miss but this one is not bad at all.

cheers

I had that one & found it to have very poor reception, in fact when I took it back, they said I was third person that week to do so.

Go to this site:

http://home.iprimus.com.au/rfh/radio_receiption.html

(ignore the mis-spelling of reception, just cut and paste) and you'll find a six-page discussion of good radios. I have the AR1745 from Jaycar, which is very good value for money. Also small size (about the size of a packet of fags). It is not the Redsun brand, but it's the same radio, rebranded by Jarcar. Happy listening.

Hi Cuffs,
The best one we have found is the one out of the Innovations Book. Sells for $129.00 plus postage but picks up local and short wave anywhere. Its a World Band Radio Item no MBRD.
Works on 4D Bats or 240v. We use recharge batteries. Someone put us onto it a year ago and they are the best radio we have ever had. The short wave has 3 bands its great you can pick up local news or overseas. We do a lot of outback travelling and has never failed picking up a station. Just having a new off roader van built and not even bothering to put in a radio as this one beats them all. Saw it only last week still at the same price as last year.
Would highly recommend it. PS Doesn't get interference when we use it inside our van either.

Have had a Sangean ATS 803A portable for several years.
Has continuous coverage, 150 - 29999kHz. plus FM
More features than you could poke a stick at, BFO for SSB transmissions etc. (we listen to the vks 737 network)
Has been an excellent performing radio.

I had both the Digitor 'Outback' radio & then a Sangean ATS 505, neither of them seemed to have very good reception capabilities.

Hi Guys,
The Sangean 803A was a great radio. It will however be getting on for 20 years old now and is no longer available new.

Second hand ones occasionally surface on e-Bay, but without knowing history, you could be buying a problem due to age.

Unfortunately Sangean Radio's these days are made in China, and the recent crop of ATS 505 and new models are just not the same quality in comparison with the earlier models.

This is not to say that what comes from China is rubbish.

I recently bough a Degen 1103 for just under $100 off e-bay. It came from China.

In comparison to my other radios, (over 20 at the last count), the Degen is brilliant performer, and is well built. My only gripe is that the supplied recharge-able batteries don't hold charge.

So if you want something that will perform well, and you won't get upset if it gets dirty / damaged whilst camping (ie is low cost), go the Degen 1103.

Do a google search on the Degen 1103 if you want to find out more.

Cheers,
Mal
