We are three months now into our 6 month caravan trip, and in case you remember my forum posts from a couple of months ago, things have got a lot better!

We have been doing a lot of free camping and I have definitely got in the swing of it. I have used 'Stephen L from Clare SA's advice of using baby wipes to get clean, and it is working well.

Thing is, we've been without showers for a couple of weeks now and we're starting to pong even after baby wipes! My shoulder length hair is well overdue for a proper shampoo!

We will be in Tamworth later in the week. Does anyone have a spot with hot showers they can recommend? We are happy to pay, but not the $49 per night for a powered site I got quoted today (for 2 adults, 2 kids).

Looking forward to hearing from you,

lizzyb

We were in Tamworth in January.
There is a swimming pool near the West Leagues Club.
Maybe you could pay for a swim and use their showers – don’t know what it would cost.

During the Country festival the council puts on a lot of temporary facilities for the overflow of visitors – call into the visitors centre and they may be able to direct you to public showers.

The outdoor pools are shut for winter, indoor pool is in a fitness club

Suggest you contact a couple of the smaller CP and ask if you can pay for just a shower as we once did at Boulia, $5 head from memory

CP to try are City Lights on southern side, Sydney Rd or North Tamworth on NE Highway at Nemingha. IF you are going near Nundle, try that CP as well.

have you thought of buying a solar shower ? you can put hot water in it if the sun during the day doesn't heat it enough.
you only need a little amount to lather up then rinse off.

be careful not use boiling water.

The larger ones will hold enough water for all of you.

we have used them for years and once you gets to using them you won't use heaps of water.

good luck with the hair washing!

Great idea Harold. For $50 or $70 you can buy a whole shower tent (if you want to cover up in the bush, we don't :) and a cheap solar shower. Then use it a 100 times.

Hi Lizzyb

When I was a kid we didn't have a shower, just a tin bath as did many other families. We washed our hair in a basinful of water, ditto for rinsing, or get your other half to pour the rinse water over your head. You could get a plastic dish to wash you hair in if all else fails.

We use a 12v shower (from any decent camping store or even Big W) that plugs into a cig socket. The pump just drops into a bucket of water that you have mixed to the right temperature. With a bit of practice you can have a good shower in 2 or 3 litres of water, but obviously if you have access to plenty of water you can splash out a bit - literally.

If you cant have a shower get a dish of water and a big sponge and that works pretty well too provided you can find somewhere where you can splash the water round a bit.

Its all about thinking laterally and working out how do I solve this particular problem - one of the joys of camping IMHO.

Cheers,

Val.

Try the squash courts. Have used them in Bathurst for years in October. From memory I think Tamworth has a couple of clubs.

Hi Lizzy

I am pleased to hear you have been progressing well.

If the leads given here such as visitor centre, swimming pool etc don't help, try roadhouses, or approach a hotel or motel and ask for a quote to use a bathroom - they can only say no, or give you a price.

We have a wash or shower every night when travelling - we discovered we don't sleep well without the evening ritual even if we have only been sitting in an air conditioned car all day. We can 'sponge over' in very few litres of warm water, and this can be done even if in a tent (a towel or two around the bowl to collect the splashes). When camping out away from the caravan we do the same outside just before climbing into the sleeping bags on the back of the ute. We find bathing in our caravan shower recess easier than showering, and we get just as clean and fresh. Very water and gas efficient too.

My hair is nearer waist length, and i like to go to a caravan park or servo shower once a week for a good shower and shampoo, however when unable to i can wash my hair in a four litre icecream container. Read about showering, bathing and hair washing in my conserving water article at:Economical use of water

Hi Muzbry

We have one of those black plastic solar bag shower which our daughter gave us about 15 or so years ago which has been many thousands of kilometres with us and has never been used. The tub bath works well (or even sponging water from a tiny bucket), no problems with water around the camp, and two of us can wash in a couple of litres if water is really low or disposal an issue.

Years ago we had been camping along the Ningaloo Coast back in the days when we had glorious seaside camps all to ourselves, and as we only carried a couple of jerry can of water; one for drinking and one for everything else, a swim in the sea sufficed for a wash. When we got to the Lighthouse CP at Exmouth, i headed for the showers with my shampoo and conditioner, and our neighbours who were retirees wintering in the warmth said i wouldn;t be able to wash my hair as the water was too salty. "Not as salty as where we've been washing" I replied. "This is the saltiest water you'll find" they insisted. "Not as salty as where we've been washing" I reiterated. "Oh yes it is - you'll see". "Not as salty as the Indian Ocean". "Fair enough".

Trotting track and showground complex are both up for sale, uncertain if they are still operating. You can talk to them though through Tamworth P&A Assoc on 6765 9381

Tamworth info centre is 6767 5300, normally staffed by volunteers.

The information centre is 100m from where I have worked for 20 years and I didn't even know that they had showers! It is also right next door to another Caravan Park, that is why I was surprised they had showers. But as it doubles as the Bus Centre for interstate buses, I suppose I can see why they do have showers.

I think the two CP I mentioned earlier and the Showground will be the best bet for a family, you will be able to spread out with a bit more privacy

Good grief......we shower every day and wife washes hair every day and we are bush-camping 99% of the time.

Our old plastic shower is starting to wear and so we bought a new one at a Camping Shop a couple of days ago for $9.95 and it is an improved model!

If pressed in bad weather conditions we lay a tarp down on the caravan floor(no shower cubicle) and have a good tub.

Hi lizzyb

Go to Bunnings or any hardware store and purchase a $9.00 poison spray bottle. They hold about 4 litres. Fill up with warm to hot water, pump the bottle and use the spray arm as a shower. Very easy and very efficient. You may need to adjust the spray end. I'm sure others on this web site have added other "heads" to the spray end. Also I can highly recommend a canvas shower bag from Camping stores. They are a 2 to 3 litre canvas bag with a large shower rose hanging out the bottom. You twist the rose to control the flow, eg to stop it so you can soap up etc. This is a fantastic shower and very decadent in my books. Even our children at the ages of 4 and 5 were able to handle this shower, once we set it up for them.
Happy travels

Gee Deede, I had tears running down my face from laughter when I read your first line. It took me a few minutes to get back and read on.
I thought you were going to tell Lizzyb to fill the bottle with tick wash or chlorine or something like that.
But that using the spray bottle for showering is a good idea. Just got to learn to use it a bit more regularly.

I know if I needed a shower after 2 weeks and there was 4 of us I would no hesitate to spend $49, think of it as a luxury and enjoy.

Plus your supporting a small business in a town that relies on tourists to survive and serve future tourists.

Or you could do what others above have suggested, buy a garden sprayer and use that.... that's what we use when away from towns.

Lucky your not in Cobber Pedy, you would have to pay for the water you use as well !

I agree Personnel Hygiene comes first in my books.

We have roughed it many a time when camping ect, but staying clean is a number one priority.

My first consideration is to make sure my wife is content when travelling and that is making sure she has the minimum comforts of life.

With myself, I can go without having a shower ect for long stints, I have done it in the passed, but there is so many options now.

Take note of all of the above suggestions.

Cheers

The Tamworth Information Centre showers is worth keeping in the black book. Good information.

Lots of good information given. Let's face it, personal hygiene is not rocket science, just common sense. The baby wipes are a good last resort for a one or two off situation, but several weeks ?? Where have you guys been camping?

As Motherhen and others have mentioned, a bucket and a sponge with shower gel instead of soap is pretty hard to beat as a backup kit, and since you are in the bush, privacy shouldn't be an issue. Heck, at about $1 each, everyone can have their own personal sponge. A good sponge bath is pretty hard to beat at any time.

Enjoy the rest of your trip folk.

Lizzy,
We bought one of those kids blow up splash pools about a metre across. Blow up the bottom ring only. A couple of litres of warm water in a bucket and a car wash sponge will give you a great wash down using minimal water. No water on the floor of the tent - or caravan. Then tip the water over the nearest grateful tree.

Hi, we are traveling Australia and are 6 months into our 12 month trip.
We went to tamworth and stayed at a place called binnaway pumphouse. It's about half hour from tamworth (towards nundle) an they had great hot showers!!
The camPground is free. It's 2 dollars for a shower and you can have power for 2 dollars (3 hours).

We left Sydney with the shower you put into a bucket of hot water, but we were wasting so much gas and time heating the water so we bought the Coleman - hot water on demand. Paid $300 an haven not regretted it one bit! Means we can go for the free places and still hbe a luxury hot shower :) check it out!

Happy traveling.
Have a look at our website for other places we have stayed if ur interested- myaussieadventure.com

Hi MAA, This campground sounded perfect! I've just looked it up on Google maps and their directions say it is over 150km from Tamworth. We'll go foir something a bit closer.

I rang Nundle Caravan Park though and they've quoted $23 a night so we'll check them out...

The Coleman sounds good. I think this will go on my wishlist!

Thanks for your ideas,

Hi lizzy,
I'm so sorry, I gave you the wrong place. I'm getting mixed up. We stayed at binnaway pumphouse when we were near Coonabarrabran. While in Tamworth we stayed in a campground at Woolomin.
It's a free place next to the river. Nice spot and really large Camping area. It's behind the general store. (little tiny town)
They have toilets but no showers (but lots of water in the river) and there is the option of power - I think it was just a few dollars to connect to the power.

Sorry again!
Good luck in finding somewhere :)

Woolomin is about 30km from Tamworth (towards Nundle)
Also just another few km is Chaffy Dam. About 7km from Woolomin i think. They have toilets and showers there (gold coin donation)
We just went there one day for a shower :)
I'm not sure if there are fees to camp there. But all the spots overlook the dam- really pretty.

We've ended up staying at Manilla Ski Gardens Caravan park in a powered site for $18 for 4, heaps of room for the kids to ride their bikes and hot, hot showers. We are happy as Larry!!

We got to Tamworth this afternoon and just found everything a bit too big so kept driving. We'll definitely pay Tamworth a visit on a couple of day trips this weekend - we figure the fuel costs will be outweighed by the accommodation cost savings.
